Rain jackets, shells and pants are perhaps one of the most essential pieces of an outdoor gear one should own. They will obviously keep you dry in rain but they can also double as shell for winter protection, mountaineering and travel. Simply use insulating mid-layer underneath and you have effectively created a system that will perform as hard as you do.

There are basically two categories of rain jackets: water repellent jackets and waterproof jackets. The main difference as the name suggests, is in the level of protection. Water repellent jackets are usually still made of waterproof fabric, but the seams are not taped, or are only critically taped, meaning that the manufacturer has taped the seams only in key areas, such as shoulder and sleeves. Water proof jackets on the other hand, are fully taped and are usually made of fabric that delivers higher lever of water protection. All our rain jackets and pants are made of fabric that is fully breathable, meaning that the sweater and water wapor will escape from the jacket and you will not have the clammy wet feeling. Some jackets feature a liner, usually made of breathable mesh that is designed to keep the waterproof membrane away from the body and thus reduce the rubbery feel you might not like, on the other hand thay will add weight to the jacket. Most technical shells do not have the mesh lining as they are meant to be worn over a piece of clothing.

Rain jackets and rain pants will feel little on the larger side as they are intentionally designed this way in order to be worn over your clothes. The last thing you would want to do when it starts raining is to change your jacket--simply put the pants and the jacket on top of what you are wearing already and you are ready to continue in your outdoor expedition, rain or shine.
